St Matthew's Primary: A Thriving School Community Supported Through GivingLottery

St Matthew's Primary is a popular, well-regarded school offering an all-round education for children aged 4 to 11. It's a place that feels happy, energetic and confident, and where every child who walks through the doors is encouraged to grow, both academically and socially.

The school's aim is simple but ambitious: to create a culture of aspiration, opportunity, security, thoughtfulness and confidence. St Matthew's wants to show children what's possible when they seek, imagine, work hard, practise, think, collaborate and challenge themselves and others. Every child is recognised as an individual, and the school's broad curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities give pupils the chance to explore their own passions and interests alongside their academic learning.

One of the largest primary schools in Luton

St Matthew's is one of the largest primary schools in Luton, with four classes in each year group, and it usually holds waiting lists for most year groups, especially Reception. Demand has been so high that, before the Easter 2024 break, Luton Borough Council asked the school to create a fifth class in Year 2, to accommodate 30 pupils from the existing waiting list. That year group will now continue through the school as a five-form year group. Then, in September 2025, the school welcomed 150 new children into Reception, growing that year group to five classes too.

The school community now totals 875 pupils and around 150 staff. Despite its size, St Matthew's remains calm, personal and purposeful, a big school with small community habits, where everyone's wellbeing sits at the heart of its ethos. Children, parents and staff alike often describe the feeling of being part of an ambitious, supportive family, and visitors regularly comment on just how positive, inclusive and caring the atmosphere is.

Helping every child believe in what's possible

In this nurturing environment, children are encouraged to be confident, to be excited by learning, and to find their voice, whatever their background or starting point. St Matthew's wants every child, throughout their time at the school and long after they leave, to know that the opportunities life has to offer are there for everyone, including them.

We're proud to help support schools like St Matthew's through our GivingLottery, giving people a simple way to back the causes and communities that matter to them. Since joining in March 2026, the school is set to raise £748 this year, funds that will go straight back into St Matthew's, helping to fund events and activities for the children.
